SciFi and Fantasy Art: Mad Jack Wyndlam (color)

My bonny wee pirate! Star of my second novel and almost the opposite of most romance novel pirates: he's small and wiry, a gentleman and a thoroughly larcenous scoundrel and has no problem lying his way out of trouble, but keeps any word he gives. He is master of the Mercy's Ransom and is very much a child of the sea. Though he is called Handsome Jack, he is called Mad to his back and by his enemies because he is known to be more than a little crazy.... crazy like a fox, that is....

(Story for sale under title Mercy's Ransom in ebook format. Find it HERE

ALL of this was done by hand. The ship, the rigging, the pirate were sketched (separately), scanned and painted in PS6. The sea, land and sky were hand painted in PS6 from a reference photo for color and the 'lay of the land' aka perspective. This took me a lot of work, finding the right photos for ship references, the right seas, painting the rigging strand by strand, so pick it apart as ye please, but bear in mind: Unlike the Sparrow he's undoubtedly going to be compared to... he's not saving his one shot from that pistol! (Besides, I'm modeling him more on a braver version of Calico Jack Rackham!)
Now, if I can only get Clio to let me see Sirene... AND draw her...

Neat! what a quirky pirate chap. i admire your work, but i do think you might have saved some face by not flying off the handle like that at "the zealot". no matter how twinged u may have been by his/her remarks, your response kinda made it seem that u felt guilty and needed to justify urself in some way. and as you said yourself, u pointed out the same thing already above, which in turn kinda makes yOUR “flame” superfluous. In any event, you were hardly left with NO place to explain yourself. I really don’t think it’s fair of you to call them evil just for stating their opinion in a public forum, although I understand your frustration at their disregard of your original commentary on this piece. ps: calico jack is a super cool name. congratulations.

:-) Sandra Leigh Wagner replies: "thank you, but letting even one of those jerks have an inch with me, means they'll run roughshod over some poor teenager with real talent who'll never recover or draw again. That is not what the comments are for. There are ways to say negative things without them being taken as accusations but that was not the case here. I am a defensive person by nature, sorry... no wait, I don't appologize for that, cause I don't just stand up for myself. I've taken the heads of flamers in others' galleries too.
but for the record, MY Jack's pirate name is AmberJack, like the fish, not Calico Jack, who is an actual historical pirate named Jack Rackham who's flag was the skull and crossed sabers so popular today. I agree it is a cool name, but I'm not claiming it mine!!!"

what a strange picture! I like it. strange pose, he doesn't really look like 'pirates of the carribean at all'. He has this wonderfull staggering look about him, like he's drunk to the eyeballs, and getting up to all kinds of nautical nonsense. the background and ropes are quite nice. allthough far from realistic they are allmost impressionistic, in a wierd digital sort of way... they don't really look quite what they are but they convey an impression of rope or mild deep seas. the shadow on the boat lets it down a little (sorry!!) but I love the colouring of the pirate, it's great, and very bold. I can allmost hear the wind and feel the rough texture of the ropes, smell the rum the pirates are drinking, aAArr!

great work! I like it alot.

:-) Sandra Leigh Wagner replies: "wow. thanks. I really appreciate that. The ropes and the boat were very hard to do, and I did the seas from a photograph I had of a hazy day on the ocean. But thank you for the 'not POTC at all' comment! Maybe I ought to do Sirene surfing the whale next lol! If you can 'feel the wind' then I did my job!"

The only thig i see is maybe the right eye is a tad larger. But I love it. Everyone knows artist use any pose from anything. I love pirates and mermaids. Great work!

:-) Sandra Leigh Wagner replies: "youknow I never noticed that. Chalk it up to perspective. You do know that no face is perfectly symetrical? in nature?
But thank you "

Now iknow what else i want for x-mas, beside Jack Sparrow, lol. He looks great, and he dose remind me of Jack Sparrow. I tink its the pattern of the pants, looks like that piece of material that Jack has around his waste. anyway, great pic.

:-) Sandra Leigh Wagner replies: "thank you, and Yes, the pants remind you of Jack's sash cause I liked the pattern and remembered an historical pirate that wore striped pants and thought they'd look good. The scarf and the style of his clothes are very period, so making a pirate picture that DOESN't remind someone of a costume from PotC is going to be hard adn still be accurate, cause they paid attention to every detail."

Like the colours, paticurly the gold sash. I also like the pose despite what Mr. Zelot says, it looks like he's trying to keep his balance on a semi rough day without holding onto anything (while standing on the rail!) The whole pic is very detailed and very cool!

:-) Sandra Leigh Wagner replies: "Thank you. It is exactly what he's doing, having fun! He wouldn't be my Jack and not be having fun at sea! (unless he was in a fight)"

Wow, I'm glad you decided to stand up against that flamer. You are a real powerhouse, and all your points were so true. All artists have used photo reference at one point or another. Keep it up!!

:-) Sandra Leigh Wagner replies: "thanks. I don't know why I left it up, perhaps to keep such comments from repeating."

Amazing picture,Sandra.About thre years ago I saw "Pirates of the Caribean; The curse of Black Pearl" and I could say that it is most great adventure-action movie I have ever saw before. As for Orlando Bloom (Will Turner) he's most hot and handsome man God giveth to the world^^ I felt in love with.Couple weeks ago I had a dream of him and I wished my dream of Orly were real.
Expect this movie I love Bollywood movies and Hindu movie songs of Bollywood.I'm sure you like it too,Sandra!!

Cheers,very good work!!

:-) Sandra Leigh Wagner replies: "thank you. I'm more a Sparrow Fan. I never got on the Orlando Bloom train, really. I can't wait until the second movie starts! Just for the record... I was dreaming up this particular Jack (my AmberJack) before the movie came out."

Why is he barefoot?

:-) Sandra Leigh Wagner replies: "Because the character likes to go barefoot on deck, which many sailors did. And I like him barefoot."

I really like this piece. It's nicely done. 2

:-) Sandra Leigh Wagner replies: "thank you. I love and hate him at the same time. He's not quite how I see him, but then again, my muse never lets me draw them how I see them...."

(jack reaches for treasure through screen) me- NOOOO you cant have my booty. jack-I dont want your booty I want the treasure. me-oh ok here you go(hands treasure through screen then pushes jack overboard). me-thats what you get for not wanting my booty!

ok where were we.....oh yes......I really liked his rings and his hair ,but now that I pushed him overboard the picture is very empty, but the ocean does look very realistic. LOL good job ^__^

:-) Sandra Leigh Wagner replies: "Umm, I don’t know if you know this or not but... he can swim. He has a ...*whispers* tail if he gets wet. His grandmother was a mermaid.

Thank you. the seas were very hard. He wasn’t easy either, though he IS easy on the eyes."
